Stories of Our Impact
“From the very beginning, the program was welcoming, patient, and attentive to the unique needs of my son. I was initially hopeful that it would help him build confidence and enjoy being on the water, but it did so much more than that. Seeing the smile on my son’s face as he talked about sailing was priceless. He has always loved the water, but now sailing has become a special addition to his list of favorite activities. The experience not only brought him joy but also built his confidence in trying new things. Spectrum Sailing will forever hold a special place in our hearts as the organization that allowed my son to discover his love for sailing.“

“I am so grateful that my son had this opportunity to participate in camp and operate a boat. I loved that the camp was mostly hands-on and operating the boat, with minimal classroom time. My son learns with his hands, so this was the best learning experience for him. Spectrum Sailing has given him a sense of independence, confidence and accomplishment. Our experience with Spectrum Sailing more than exceeded our expectations.“

“A purely positive experience for our 14-year-old grandson who shared, “this was the best time of my life”. As grandparents raising a teen on the spectrum, we find many days challenging. Because of this program, this week was one of our favorite summers to witness his personal growth! This was the first time he was around other peers who share the same differences, he was encouraged that he wasn’t alone on this journey.“

“Spectrum Sailing is a wonderful all-inclusive program! It allows for special needs individuals to learn not only to sail in a calm manner, but also to push them outside of their comfort zone to experience something extremely fun and rewarding. Scott Herman and his staff are incredible at what they do in providing a life-long skill in a beautiful sport, which also includes developing social skills and teamwork. I, along with many others, are very happy to see someone take the lead with this kind of unique program and super excited to see it grow! Keep up the great work!“

Spectrum Sailing in Action
At Spectrum Sailing, every day begins with safety. Before our sailors leave the dock we teach them skills and knowledge to help them on the water. Here a a few water safety principles we practice at every camp:
• Life Jackets – Properly fitting life jackets are the most effective layer of safety on the water. At camp volunteers and instructors help check the fit and buckles of each campers jacket.
• Weather Awareness – Wind and weather can change quickly so before every session our team checks the conditions to make sure they are safe for our sailors. Monitoring wind speeds, gusts, and weather changes help create the best environment possible for our campers while on the water.
•Hydration and Sun Protection – Staying hydrated and protected from the sun keeps sailors alert and focused. Heat can easily cause fatigue and dehydration on the water so we make sure campers always have water to drink and sunscreen to apply. A huge thank you to @harkenderm for providing the sunscreen that kept our campers protected all season☀️
Spectrum Sailing is honored to recognize the incredible generosity of the TKF Spirit Fund, whose support helped bring our 2025 camps across the country. Their commitment to youth development and expanding access to the water ensures that autistic children and their families can experience the confidence, teamwork, and pure joy that sailing inspires.
Together, we’re creating a more inclusive world, one sail at a time⛵️💙
For kids and teens with autism sailing can be more than just a fun activity. It can be an empowering experience.
Learning and experiencing sailing builds confidence, social skills, and self esteem, helping campers see what they are capable of on and off the water.
Campers experience structure, teamwork, and inclusion, all while developing friendships and memories that last far beyond the dock.
From teamwork and communication to self confidence and personal growth, sailing equips our campers with the skills and courage to face new challenges long after camp ends.
